HISTORY OF THE ADVANCED STUDENT HONOUR ROLL (ASHR)

“I created Advanced Student Honour Roll because they were considered truly essential in expressing the potential of my method’s placing importance on individualised study that allows each child to study at the just-right level. In other words, I thought that a glance at the roll would show how far students had progressed in their studies beyond their actual school year level.”

Toru Kumon, founder of the Kumon Method

In 1959, Mr Toru Kumon, founder of the Kumon Method, introduced the Advanced Student Honour Roll (ASHR) to encourage students who study materials ahead of their school grade level.

While watching the Olympic Games in 1932, Mr Toru Kumon came up with the idea of a world ranking for intellectual achievements.

He believed that human potential is boundless and that athletic achievements should not be the only benchmark for it. Thus, he created the ASHR to reflect the academic progress of individual students who go through self-learning according to the Kumon Method.

The ASHR celebrates achievements in the Kumon Mathematics, English, Chinese and Japanese programmes and has four different qualifying levels -  six months, two years, three years and five years. It reflects the extent of academic potential that children have, and can be used by Kumon students and families to assess academic abilities objectively on a nationwide scale.

By celebrating the achievements of students who are studying at a higher level, it motivates children to pursue learning beyond their current abilities.

General Manager's message

line-2

Dear Awardees,

Congratulations to all of you on your well-earned recognitions.

I am Makoto Adachi, General Manager for Kumon Singapore and Brunei.

At Kumon, we want to help every student achieve faster and higher progress through individualised instruction and study. However, it is not an easy feat. Yet, you have shown your ability to study beyond your school grade level and many of you have even completed the Kumon programmes! This is truly wonderful. Your family and Kumon Instructor must be very proud of you!

Some time ago, Kumon conducted a survey in Japan and asked senior Kumon students who had progressed to highly advanced levels in their Kumon study, "What are the things you pay attention to in your Kumon study?" These students pointed out three things, which I want to share here.

First, cultivate study habits. It is easier to get into the habit of studying when you study at a fixed time each day

Second, it is important to be familiar with the Kumon study method, especially following the steps in which you do the worksheets.

The worksheets contain many examples and explanations. Read and study them carefully, understand them and follow the study working steps. Then, if your answer is wrong, do not erase it immediately. Always find out where you have made a mistake before you correct the answer. This means that a key to improving your study is to follow these study steps.

The third and final tip is not to be afraid of failure. Everyone hates to fail. Nevertheless, even if you are learning something for the first time, think about solving the questions yourself. When you gain many experiences of thinking and solving problems on your own, you will become someone who can challenge yourself further in whatever you do.

If you keep these three points in mind and work on them constantly, your academic and self-learning abilities will surely improve even further, even after completing the Kumon programmes.

Once again, I congratulate you on your achievements.

Makoto Adachi
General Manager
