HISTORY OF THE ADVANCED STUDENT HONOUR ROLL (ASHR)

HISTORY OF THE ADVANCED
STUDENT HONOUR ROLL (ASHR)

In 1959, Mr Toru Kumon, founder of the Kumon Method, introduced the Advanced Student Honour Roll (ASHR) to encourage students who study materials ahead of their school grade level.

While watching the Olympic Games in 1932, Mr Toru Kumon came up with the idea of a world ranking for intellectual achievements. He believed that human potential is boundless and that athletic achievements should not be the only benchmark for it. Thus, he created the ASHR to reflect the academic progress of individual students who go through self-learning according to the Kumon Method.

“I created Advanced Student Honour Roll because they were considered truly essential in expressing the potential of my method’s placing importance on individualised study that allows each child to study at the just-right level. In other words, I thought that a glance at the roll would show how far students had progressed in their studies beyond their actual school year level.”

– Toru Kumon, founder of the Kumon Method

The ASHR celebrates achievements in the Kumon Mathematics, English, Chinese and Japanese programmes and has four different qualifying levels -  six months, two years, three years and five years. It reflects the extent of academic potential that children have, and can be used by Kumon students and families to assess academic abilities objectively on a nationwide scale. By celebrating the achievements of students who are studying at a higher level, it motivates children to pursue learning beyond their current abilities.

GM MESSAGE

Dear Awardees,

First, I would like to congratulate you on receiving your award for studying materials at least 5 years ahead of school grade. To all Completers of our Kumon Programmes, congratulations!

Due to the impact of COVID-19, we had to change our original plan of inviting you and your family to the University Cultural Centre as we have done in the past two years. Thanks to everyone’s understanding and support, I am grateful that this year, we can still bring everyone together and celebrate your excellent achievements together.

Your achievement is, first and foremost, the result of your tireless efforts. Secondly, it is also because of the warm support and cooperation you receive from your family on a day-to-day basis. I want to express my deepest gratitude to you and your amazing supporters at home. Thank you very much!

Today, as we all know, the whole world is battling against an unknown virus with all our might. It is an ongoing battle of the virus against mankind’s’ knowledge and insight. We, humans, have faced many trials and tests throughout history, and we overcame all of them by using our knowledge and insight. This time, we will definitely overcome the crisis too. Let us get through it by staying united and keeping our vigilance always.

This year marks Kumon Singapore’s 25th anniversary. Many Kumon students have grown up and are flourishing in their endeavours in Singapore and other parts of the world. In the near future, I believe every student commended here will play notable roles in various fields like the students who preceded you, contributing to the development of societies and the global community.

I look forward to your endeavours and achievements as you create a bright future. Once again, congratulations to all awardees and their families. Finally, I sincerely wish all of you good health and happiness.
