Here are some suggestions to support your children's home learning with Kumon on their journey to becoming independent lifelong learners.
Setting a 'Kumon Time' Each Day
Create a new routine by looking at your family's weekly schedule and decide when a 'Kumon Time' will be. You can set a 'Kumon Time' around an everyday activity, such as after breakfast or before dinner. The ideal time is when you can be present to support your children as they learn, especially in the early stages of their Kumon study. Some days are busier than others, and the unexpected can arise but aim to be consistent.
Creating a Kumon Space
Choose an area, a Kumon study space, free from distractions such as the television, computers or excessive noise. It could be during a quiet time at the dining table or in their room. A Kumon space should have pencils, a sharpener, an eraser and a digital clock so children can time their work. Continued supervision is essential to ensure your children feel supported.
Particularly, it is necessary to supervise young children working through the Pencil Skills Programme, English levels 7A, 6A, 5A and 4A, and Maths levels 6A, 5A and 4A
Doing Kumon worksheet
- Remind your child to write his or her name, the date, starting and ending time on the worksheet. For young children who are still working on their penmanship, you can guide them along.
- For children who are still learning to be independent, guide them by following the instructions printed on the worksheets. Read the instructions to them if they are not able to read on their own.
- Encourage your child to complete the worksheets in one seating while maintaining a continuous pace of study.
- Always remember to praise and motivate your child by focusing on his or her effort and not only on one's achievements. For instance, "You learned to solve multiplication by yourself, great effort!"
*BONUS TIP* Consider using the corrected worksheets returned from the learning centre as a reference to show your children what they have achieved or for your children to use as revision.
