The Kumon Method
Understanding how Kumon works
What is the Kumon Method?
The Kumon Method is an individualised, self-learning approach to academic enrichment developed by Toru Kumon in Japan in 1958 — originally created for his own son. At its heart is the belief that every child has vast, unrealised potential that can be developed through consistent, independent study.
Rather than teaching students in a uniform manner, Kumon starts each student at a "just-right" level where they can achieve a perfect score independently. From there, they progress step by step — at their own pace — through carefully structured worksheets designed to take them from easy problems to more challenging material without gaps.
What is the difference between Kumon and tuition?
Kumon is a self-study enrichment programme — not tuition. In traditional tuition, a teacher instructs students on topics and helps them prepare for upcoming school tests. At Kumon, students work through structured worksheets independently, developing the ability to comprehend new material and solve problems on their own.
The key difference is the outcome: tuition tends to build short-term exam readiness, while Kumon develops lifelong self-learning ability, focus, and the confidence to tackle any academic challenge independently — skills that go far beyond any single subject or examination.
Does self-learning mean the Kumon Instructor does not teach anything?
Self-learning means students work through their worksheets and learn to correct their own mistakes independently. The worksheets are carefully designed so students can figure out how to solve problems on their own, with clear examples introduced when new topics begin.
Kumon Instructors play a vital role — they observe how each student studies, assign appropriate worksheets to match each child's ability, and provide gentle hints when a student encounters difficulty. They do not spoon-feed answers, but guide each child to discover solutions themselves, deepening true understanding.
Is the Kumon Method effective?
Yes. Kumon is one of the world's largest after-school enrichment programmes, with more than 3.5 million students enrolled across 60+ countries and regions. In Singapore alone, Kumon has been nurturing independent learners for more than 25 years across 70+ centres.
The method's effectiveness lies in its consistency: daily practice at a "just-right" level builds genuine mastery. Many Kumon students progress well beyond their current school grade level in Maths and English, which translates into greater confidence and capability in the classroom.
What makes Kumon different from other enrichment programmes in Singapore?
Three things set Kumon apart:
- Individualised learning: Every child starts at their own level and advances at their own pace — not the class's pace.
- Self-learning method: Kumon's worksheets develop the ability to study and problem-solve independently — a habit that benefits children across all subjects and beyond school.
- Advance beyond school grade: Rather than keeping pace with school, the goal is to progress ahead — equipping your child through enrichment programmes to handle future academic challenges before they arrive.
Who founded Kumon and what is the origin of the method?
Kumon was founded in 1958 by Toru Kumon, a high school mathematics teacher in Japan. When his son Takeshi struggled with second-grade arithmetic, Toru Kumon began writing his own study materials — sheets of simple calculation problems his son could work through independently each day.
By the time Takeshi reached high school, he was studying calculus independently. Inspired by this, Toru Kumon began sharing his worksheets with other parents. That same belief — that every child, given the right support, can advance further than anyone expects — is still at the heart of Kumon's work today, in more than 60 countries worldwide. Getting Started
Enrolment, assessment, and finding a centre
What is the right age for my child to start Kumon?
Kumon welcomes students from as young as three years old through to Primary school, Secondary school and Junior College. There is no single "right" age — the right time is whenever your child is ready to begin building strong foundations and good study habits.
Many parents in Singapore choose to start during the preschool years (K1–K2) to build a strong foundation before Primary 1. Others enrol in primary or secondary school to fill gaps, build pace and accuracy, or advance beyond their current grade. Every student begins at their own just-right level.
How does the diagnostic assessment work?
Before your child begins the Kumon programme, they complete a Diagnostic Assessment — a simple, low-pressure evaluation that helps the Kumon Instructor identify the level at which your child can study comfortably and confidently.
The goal is to start at a level where your child can achieve a perfect score on their own, building momentum and the joy of learning before gradually advancing. The diagnostic assessment is offered free of charge, together with a Parent Orientation session. Register here.
Where are the Kumon centres in Singapore?
There are over 70 Kumon Centres across Singapore, located in housing estates, shopping malls, and community hubs island-wide — from Woodlands and Yishun in the north, to Tampines and Bedok in the east, and Jurong and Clementi in the west.
Find your nearest centre using our online centre locator here. Select centres also offer KUMON CONNECT, which allows your child to access and submit worksheets digitally at home.
Can my child enrol at any time of year, or only at the start of a term?
Your child can begin their Kumon journey at any time of year — there is no need to wait for the start of a school term or semester. Because the Kumon programme is fully individualised, each student progresses at their own pace and is not tied to a class group or a fixed syllabus timeline.
Simply register for a free Diagnostic Assessment and Parent Orientation at your preferred centre to get started. Enquire with your chosen centre regarding their availability for new enrolments.
Our Programmes
Maths, English, and Chinese Enrichment Classes
What programmes does Kumon Singapore offer?
Kumon Singapore offers three enrichment programmes:
- Kumon Maths Programme: Covers number sense and counting through to precalculus, trigonometry, and calculus — building calculation fluency, logical thinking, and mathematical confidence from the ground up.
- Kumon English Programme: Develops vocabulary, reading comprehension, sentence structure, summarisation, and critical reading through a structured curriculum including a 380-book Recommended Reading List.
- Kumon Chinese Programme: Builds Mandarin fluency through reading, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension — supporting Mother Tongue learning within and beyond the school syllabus.
Each programme is studied independently. Families may enrol in one, two, or all three subjects. Enquire with your preferred centre for more information.
Does Kumon supplement the Singapore MOE school curriculum?
Yes — Kumon is designed as a complement to school, not a replacement. MOE schools deliver the full national curriculum: teacher-led lessons, science, Mother Tongue, social studies, and formal examinations.
Kumon strengthens the core foundational skills — Maths fluency, English reading and comprehension, and Mandarin literacy — that underpin a child's ability to thrive across all subjects.
Does Kumon offer a Chinese (Mother Tongue) programme?
Yes. The Kumon Chinese Enrichment Programme builds fluency and confidence in Mandarin reading, writing, and comprehension through the same individualised, small-step approach. Given the bilingual nature of Singapore's education system, a strong foundation in Chinese is important — not just for school examinations, but for lifelong communicative confidence. The programme is suitable for students from preschool through secondary level.
What does "advancing beyond school grade level" mean, and is that realistic?
Kumon students are encouraged to progress at the pace their ability allows — not at the pace of their school class. Many students find that consistent daily practice eventually places them studying material that is six months, one year, or even two or more years ahead of their current school grade.
When your child has already encountered the concepts being taught in school, classroom learning becomes a revision exercise — building confidence and freeing up mental space to go deeper. It is not a race; it is a gradual, sustainable advance driven by genuine mastery at every step.
What is a Kumon Completer, and what does it mean for my child?
A Kumon Completer is a student who has completed the final worksheet level of their programme — equivalent to pre-university level study. Completers have demonstrated the ability to study advanced Maths or language material independently, and are recognised and celebrated annually at Kumon's award ceremonies.
For parents, a Completer means your child has developed not only subject mastery but also the self-discipline, focus, and independent learning ability to navigate university and beyond with confidence.
For Preschool Parents
Building a strong foundation before Primary 1
How does Kumon help prepare my child for Primary 1?
The transition to Primary 1 is a significant milestone. Kumon helps preschoolers develop the essential skills that make this transition smooth and confident: number sense and early arithmetic for Maths, phonics and reading fluency for English, and the study habits and focus that independent learning requires.
Beyond academics, the daily Kumon routine develops concentration, self-discipline, and a can-do attitude — qualities that teachers notice from the very first week of primary school. Your child arrives in Primary 1 not just school-ready, but with the foundational skills to begin advancing ahead of the curriculum from day one.
My child is in K1 or K2 — what will they actually study at Kumon?
A K1 or K2 child beginning Kumon will typically start at a level where they can work comfortably and independently. In Maths, this may include counting, number recognition, and early addition. In English, it may begin with letter sounds, phonics, and simple reading.
Each worksheet is designed to be achievable without adult assistance, which builds confidence and a genuine sense of accomplishment. Your child's Kumon Instructor will observe their progress closely and adjust worksheets to match exactly where they are — and where they are ready to go next. View Kumon levels, resources and recommended readings here.
Is three years old too young to start Kumon?
Kumon welcomes children from the golden window of age three. At this age, the focus is on simple, playful exercises — matching, tracing, number sense — that develop fine motor skills, attention, and early numeracy in very short, enjoyable sessions.
Research consistently points to the preschool years (ages 3–5) as a critical window for building learning foundations. Starting early does not mean pressure — it means giving your child a gentle, consistent foundation before the formal demands of primary school arrive.
Does Kumon prepare preschoolers for Primary 1 English, including reading and phonics?
Yes. The Kumon English Programme for preschoolers starts with the building blocks of literacy: letter recognition, phonics, sound-to-letter matching, and early reading. Through daily practice with small-step worksheets, your child develops reading fluency and vocabulary naturally — before the formal MOE English curriculum begins.
When your child enters Primary 1 already reading confidently, they are better positioned to understand comprehension passages, follow classroom instructions, and express themselves in writing — all key skills assessed from the earliest primary years.
Will the daily homework routine be too much for my young child?
For preschoolers, daily Kumon worksheets are intentionally short — typically 15 to 30 minutes. The exercises are designed to match your child's ability exactly, which means they should feel achievable and satisfying, not stressful.
Over time, the daily routine itself becomes a positive habit — your child learns that sitting down to study independently is simply part of their day. Many Kumon families find that building this habit early, while the stakes are low, makes the primary and secondary years significantly easier to manage.
For Primary School Parents
Speed, accuracy, and building PSLE confidence
How does Kumon help with school Maths and the PSLE?
Kumon's Maths programme develops the two core skills that determine performance in upper primary Maths: calculation speed and accuracy. Daily practice with progressive worksheets trains mental arithmetic until it becomes effortless — which frees up your child's cognitive energy for problem-solving and reasoning rather than struggling with basic computation.
The updated MOE Maths syllabus from 2026 places greater emphasis on conceptual understanding and structured reasoning. Kumon's logical, step-by-step approach to building mathematical thinking directly supports this. Students who have strong foundations through Kumon typically find PSLE-style problem sums more accessible.
My child is making careless mistakes and losing marks — how can Kumon help?
Careless mistakes in Maths are often a sign that the underlying calculation process is not yet automatic — the child is still spending effort on basic arithmetic that should be effortless, leaving less mental space to check their work carefully.
Kumon addresses this through consistent daily practice at increasing levels of difficulty. As mental calculation becomes fluid and reliable, students naturally make fewer errors. They also develop the habit of reviewing their own work, since self-correction is built into the Kumon method from the very beginning.
How does Kumon help my child with problem sums?
Solving problem sums requires three core abilities working together: reading comprehension (to understand what is being asked), calculation fluency (to work through the arithmetic quickly and accurately), and analytical thinking (to identify the correct approach).
Kumon develops all three — through the Maths programme's daily calculation practice and the English programme's comprehension and reading training. Many families who enrol in both Maths and English at Kumon find that progress in problem sums accelerates as a result.
How does Kumon's English programme complement the MOE English syllabus?
The MOE English syllabus covers comprehension, writing, oral communication, and listening — all of which depend on a wide, confident vocabulary and the ability to read and process text accurately. Kumon builds exactly these skills through progressive reading exercises, vocabulary development, and the practice of summarisation.
Where MOE covers broad literacy at the class level, Kumon deepens it at the individual level. Students who read confidently and widely through Kumon typically find MOE comprehension passages, cloze passages, and written compositions more manageable.
Does Kumon help with the 2026 updated PSLE Maths syllabus?
Yes. The 2026 Primary 6 cohort is the first to sit PSLE under the fully updated MOE Maths syllabus, which places greater emphasis on conceptual understanding, structured reasoning, and multi-step problem-solving. Kumon's approach — building strong arithmetic foundations and logical thinking through small, incremental steps — directly supports these priorities.
A child who enters upper primary with fluent mental arithmetic and a habit of working through problems independently is better placed to manage the reasoning demands of the updated syllabus, even under timed examination conditions.
Can Kumon help my child who is already ahead in school?
Absolutely. For a child who is already performing well in school, Kumon provides the opportunity to advance even further — studying material one, two, or more years ahead of their current grade. This deepens mastery, builds genuine intellectual confidence, and means that future school topics arrive as familiar ground rather than new challenges.
Many Kumon students who study ahead report that primary school work feels easier to manage — freeing up time and energy to explore other interests and approach learning with joy.
For Secondary School & JC Parents
Advanced study, foundation support, and beyond
My child is in secondary school — is it too late to start Kumon?
It is never too late. Kumon welcomes secondary school students at any stage of their journey. Whether your child needs to strengthen their foundations, maintain steady progress, or advance to JC-level material ahead of time, Kumon's individualised approach meets them exactly where they are.
The programme's structure makes it particularly well-suited to secondary students who need to fill specific gaps without feeling held back — and equally well-suited to those who are ready to push further ahead.
How does Kumon help secondary students who are struggling with Maths?
Secondary Maths difficulty very often traces back to gaps in earlier foundational skills — typically in arithmetic, fractions, algebra, or equations. Kumon's diagnostic assessment identifies precisely where your child's foundations need strengthening, and places them at that level to rebuild — without stigma or comparison to peers.
As foundational gaps are filled through consistent practice, more complex secondary topics — simultaneous equations, geometry, trigonometry — become progressively more accessible. Students find that what once felt impossible begins to feel manageable, one step at a time.
How does Kumon prepare secondary students for JC Maths and the A-Level path?
The Kumon Maths programme progresses from secondary algebra and functions all the way to precalculus, trigonometry, and calculus — the content of H2 Mathematics at the A-Level. Secondary students who advance through Kumon are not just preparing for O-Level Maths; they are building the deeper mathematical fluency that distinguishes students who thrive in JC.
Studying advanced material independently through Kumon develops the self-directed, rigorous thinking that the JC curriculum demands. Many Kumon students who have completed secondary-level work find the JC Maths transition considerably smoother as a result.
How does Subject-Based Banding (SBB) affect which Kumon level my child should be at?
Singapore's Full Subject-Based Banding system allows students to take different subjects at different levels — meaning the right foundation matters more than ever. A student who has the ability to take Additional Mathematics at a higher level, but whose arithmetic or algebraic foundations have gaps, may struggle to realise that potential.
Kumon's individualised placement ensures your child studies at the level where their foundations are truly solid — and advances from there. Whether your child is aiming for G3 subjects or strengthening G1/G2 foundations, Kumon supports that journey with consistent, personalised progression.
Can a secondary student study independently enough for Kumon to work?
Yes — in fact, secondary school students often make particularly strong progress at Kumon precisely because they have greater maturity and self-discipline to commit to daily study. The Kumon method rewards sustained, consistent effort, and secondary students typically appreciate the autonomy of working through structured material at their own pace.
Kumon Instructors continue to provide individualised guidance, support, and encouragement — ensuring that each student's programme is appropriately challenging and that any obstacles are addressed quickly and thoughtfully.
Classes, Schedule & Fees
What to expect day to day
How much is the monthly fee at Kumon Singapore? How much does Kumon cost?
The monthly fee is SGD $170 per subject programme. There is a one-time registration fee of SGD $50 payable upon enrolment. Each programme — Maths, English, and Chinese — is priced separately. Families enrolling in more than one subject pay the programme fee for each subject.
Please enquire with your preferred learning centre for the latest fee details.
How often does my child attend Kumon classes?
Students attend their Kumon Centre twice a week — approximately 30 to 45 minutes per session per subject. In a typical month, this amounts to up to eight centre sessions.
On all non-class days, students complete their Kumon worksheets at home. This daily practice is what builds genuine fluency and the habit of independent study. The total daily time at home is typically 15 to 30 minutes per subject, depending on the student's level and pace.
How much help should I give my child with their home worksheets?
The goal is for your child to complete their daily worksheets independently. Because each worksheet level builds on skills already mastered, your child should be able to work through them without needing your assistance.
Your most important role at home is to provide a quiet, consistent time and space for Kumon study — and to offer encouragement. If worksheets are consistently taking too long or causing frustration, this is valuable feedback for the Instructor to adjust the level accordingly.
Are online or at-home classes available?
Yes. Through KUMON CONNECT, students at select centres can access and submit their worksheets digitally on a tablet — at home, at the centre, or on the go. This brings the same individualised study plan and small-step progression to wherever your child studies.
Even with KUMON CONNECT, the Kumon Instructor continues to review each child's completed work, assign appropriate worksheets, and provide personalised guidance. Enquire with your nearest centre to find out if KUMON CONNECT is available.
Does Kumon follow the school term calendar?
Kumon centres generally operate throughout the year, including during school holidays — since the daily practice habit is most effective when it continues consistently. Your child's specific centre schedule and holiday operations can be confirmed with the Instructor directly.
Many families find that school holiday periods are particularly productive times for Kumon, as children have more time and energy for independent study without the pressure of school homework.
KUMON CONNECT
Digital learning, anytime, anywhere
What is KUMON CONNECT?
KUMON CONNECT is a digital learning platform that brings the Kumon study experience onto tablet devices. Through the app, students can access their assigned worksheets, complete them digitally, and submit their work — at home, at the centre, or on the go.
The same individualised study plan, small-step worksheets, and Instructor oversight remain central to the experience. KUMON CONNECT adds convenience and accessibility without changing the core method that has helped students develop independence for over 65 years.
How does KUMON CONNECT work for parents?
Through KUMON CONNECT, parents can stay up to date with their child's study progression in real time — including progress through levels, Instructor observations, and feedback on their child's learning. Whenever worksheets are assigned or adjusted, children can access them immediately, helping to close learning gaps and maintain the daily study rhythm.
The platform preserves the essential human touch: Kumon Instructors continue to review completed work, observe patterns in each student's responses, and engage with both students and parents to support each child's individual growth.

Progress & Results
What to expect and how progress is tracked
What kind of results can I expect to see in my child?
With the Kumon Method, you are likely to notice over time:
- Greater confidence in tackling academic challenges, including unfamiliar problems
- Improved self-discipline and focus — completing homework independently, with fewer reminders
- Progress beyond school grade level in Maths and/or English
- Stronger analytical ability — approaching problems more systematically
- A developing love of learning, not just academic performance
Results develop gradually through consistent daily practice. Families who commit to the programme consistently over months and years typically see the most meaningful and lasting transformation.
If my child is behind their school grade, how long will it take to catch up?
Kumon's individualised approach differs from tutoring that offers a short-term boost. If your child is behind their peers, the short-term goal is to reach grade-level competency within approximately twelve months — with consistent, daily practice.
Rather than rushing through material, Kumon ensures each step is genuinely mastered before moving forward. When your child reaches grade level, the foundation they are standing on is solid — and they are equipped to keep building from there.
How does Kumon track and assess my child's progress?
Kumon Instructors monitor each student's progress continuously — through careful observation of every worksheet set, not just periodic tests. They review completed work, note accuracy and timing, and identify patterns that indicate where a student is ready to advance or where further practice would be beneficial.
Parents receive regular updates on their child's progress, including feedback from the Instructor on study conditions, learning patterns, and next steps. Through Kumon Connect centres, real-time progress data is also accessible directly in the app.
Does Kumon help my child improve their school grades?
While Kumon's purpose is to develop independent learning ability and lifelong skills — rather than targeting grades directly — many families observe academic improvements as a natural outcome. Students with strong arithmetic foundations encounter school Maths with greater ease. Students who read widely and analytically through Kumon find comprehension passages and written tasks more accessible.
The most meaningful improvement is often in how your child approaches challenges: with curiosity and persistence rather than anxiety — and that disposition pays dividends not just in exams, but in every learning opportunity ahead.
What is the Kumon Honour Roll, and how does my child qualify?
The Kumon Honour Roll recognises students who have achieved the remarkable milestone of studying two or more years ahead of their current school grade level. It is an acknowledgement of sustained dedication, consistent daily practice, and genuine academic advancement.
Students are recognised annually through Kumon's awards ceremonies in Singapore. For many families, Honour Roll recognition is a meaningful celebration of a child's self-driven progress — a proud reminder that the effort of showing up every day has amounted to something extraordinary.
Is Kumon suitable for children with learning differences such as dyslexia or ADHD?
Kumon's fully individualised approach — where every child begins at their own level and progresses at their own pace — makes it a supportive environment for many children with different learning needs. The short daily practice sessions and structured, consistent format can be particularly beneficial for children who thrive with routine and clear expectations.
We recommend sharing your child's specific learning profile with the Kumon Instructor at the first point of contact during the initial Parent Orientation. The Instructor will then be better able to advise you further if Kumon is suitable for your child.Â
Please note that Kumon is an enrichment programme and is not a specialist intervention service.
